The Qld suburbs leading home battery uptake
A new analysis by the Queensland Conservation Council has identified the surprising Queensland postcodes leading on battery storage installation following the introduction of the national Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
The residents of Beenleigh and surrounds have made the most of the battery rebate, installing 655 kWh in the first month that the scheme was open, followed by Caloundra, Helensvale, Coomera and Springfield Lakes. In total, more than 1,700 Queenslanders used the federal rebate to install a battery in July.
This comes as the Queensland Household Energy Survey 2025 of more than 4,000 Queenslanders found that almost half of Queenslanders have rooftop solar and 24 per cent intend to purchase a solar system or upgrade their existing one in the next three years.
Queensland’s love affair with clean technology doesn’t end there, with a staggering 58 per cent of surveyed Queenslanders considering purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) in the next three years, on top of the 10 per cent who already own one.
Queensland Conservation Council campaigner Stephanie Gray said
Queenslanders are turning to clean technology in droves to affordably power their homes and businesses. We consistently see outer suburban and regional areas leading the charge in adopting rooftop solar and household batteries because it’s a smart investment to help tackle the rising cost of living.
Our latest report found that rooftop solar and distributed battery storage, including EVs, could provide up to 60 per cent of Queensland’s electricity. Currently, small-scale solar provides almost 15 per cent of Queensland’s electricity.
We know that Queensland’s homes and businesses can play a major role powering our future, especially if everyone is supported to invest in solar, storage and energy efficiency upgrades.
Right now the Queensland Crisafulli Government is developing a 5-year Energy Roadmap. We’re urging Queensland’s Energy Minister, David Janetzki, to be ambitious and innovative about the role that local energy and storage can play in Queensland’s energy future.
It’s great that the Queensland Government will soon be rolling out the Supercharged Solar for Renters program, but there’s plenty more that governments can do on a state and federal level to further boost the rollout of small-scale solar, battery storage and energy efficiency upgrades for all Queenslanders.
Helping Queensland homes and businesses to access clean technology has multiple benefits: it’s good for power bills, getting down pollution, and giving the power back to Queenslanders to generate their own energy.
The results of the Queensland Household Energy Survey 2025 highlight that there is a huge gap between homeowners and renters when it comes to being able to access clean, affordable solar energy. While more than 60 per cent of homeowners in stand alone dwellings have solar, the same can only be said for 21 per cent of renters in houses and 9 per cent in apartments.
The Queensland Conservation Council is a part of the Power Together coalition, which is calling for the Queensland Government to support the adoption of household energy efficient upgrades and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) on social housing, rentals and community buildings.
