Secret Adani deal should be made public

The Queensland Conservation Council is today slamming Premier David Crisafulli's royalty deal with Adani as a betrayal of transparency, nature, and climate. The deal, the details of which have not been made public, apparently allows Adani to defer paying royalties in exchange for expanding its Carmichael coal mine, which is one of the largest and most environmentally destructive coal mines on the planet.

Just weeks ago, it was revealed Adani has paid zero company tax since commencing operations, despite promising to put $22 billion back into the economy.

Queensland Conservation Council campaigner Ms Charlie Cox said

We are calling for Premier Crisafulli to make the details of this deal public. He is asking Queenslanders to trust Adani to pay royalties at a later date, when just weeks ago Adani was exposed as a tax evader that has engineered their revenue to avoid paying any company tax while sending profits overseas.

How can we trust Adani to pay these delayed royalties, given their history of false claims? The last time Adani made a promise like this, they said they’d put $22 billion back into the Queensland economy, but instead, they’ve paid zero company tax and are now demanding a royalties holiday.

Queenslanders are feeling the squeeze, already suffering the consequences of climate destruction through loss of homes, businesses and livelihoods, supply chain disruptions, and increased insurance premiums. They should be the Government’s priority, not Adani.

Instead of asking them to cough up royalties, to hold Adani accountable to Queenslanders and to listen to the calls of Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners to protect their country, the Government is doing deals without providing any details. How much tax are they deferring? How long are they deferring it for? These are questions we are calling on the Premier to answer.
