Habitat destruction from land clearing, urban expansion, and the growing impacts of climate change have pushed this once-common species to the brink. By 2030, scientists predict Queensland could lose up to 78% of suitable koala habitat.

Last year the Crisafulli government began consultation to develop a new strategy for Queensland's koalas.

I am writing to express my deep concern for the future of one of Australia’s most iconic and beloved species - the koala. With koala populations continuing to decline across Queensland due to habitat destruction, climate change, disease and vehicle strikes it is vital that your government creates a strong, science-based koala conservation strategy to ensure their long term health and survival.
Koalas are not only a national treasure but also a vital part of Australia's identity. Their presence plays a significant role in our tourism industry and with the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games on the way, now is the time to invest in a thriving future for koalas so that international visitors can enjoy seeing koalas in the wild and ensure that future generations have the chance to do so.
Importantly, koalas are part of the unique lifestyle and natural heritage that Australians value. Their survival is deeply connected to the health of our forests and ecosystems. Protecting koalas means protecting the native bushland and biodiversity that underpin clean air, water, and quality of life for all.
I urge you to take bold and immediate action by introducing a comprehensive koala conservation strategy that includes:

<li>Expanding the strategy to areas beyond SEQ, to capture all koala habitat in Queensland</li>
<li>Prohibit further clearing of core koala habitat</li>
<li>Embedding co-designing of koala protection plans with First Nations Traditional Owners</li>
<li>Expanding and funding Indigenous ranger programs to lead cultural land management for koala conservation</li>
<li>Increased funding for habitat restoration and corridor creation</li>
<li>Scientific monitoring and transparent public reporting of koala population trends</li>
<li>Community involvement and support for local conservation efforts</li>
</ul>
The decisions your government makes today will determine whether future generations live in a world where koalas still exist in the wild.
