QCC welcomes LNP proposal to reject Fox Coal mine in Bundaberg

Queensland Conservation Council welcomes Attorney-General Deb Frecklington’s preliminary view that a coal project near Bundaberg is not in the public interest.

The Fox Resources proposal sits on a major fruit bowl, and has copped significant backlash from the local community. The Attorney-General’s statement mirrors the same conclusion Labor made in 2024 by then Minister for State Development and Infrastructure, Grace Grace.

QCC's Coal and Gas Campaigner, Charlie Cox, said

In a period where this government has signalled they want to speed up coal approvals and delay the clean energy transition, this announcement indicating the LNP is planning to reject a coal mine is a beacon of hope.

Fox Resources’ proposal covers over 7,000 hectares of land in the heart of a thriving food bowl. The threat of a coal project of this scale to underground and downstream water supplies - including the Great Barrier Reef - and the hundreds of farmers who rely on it to feed Queenslanders, would be devastating.

The Attorney-General’s preliminary view that the Fox coal mine is not in the public interest is the right one, and it’s one we welcome.

We urge her to keep the demands of the Bundaberg community front and centre when she makes her final decision and reject the Fox coal project once and for all.

This is a good step, and we are calling on the Queensland Government to protect Queenslanders by declaring that all climate polluting coal mines are not in the public interest.
