New boardwalk promises to help boost eco-tourism: Conservationists

Queensland Conservation Council welcomes today's news that work has started on the Jindalba Boardwalk upgrade in Daintree National park. This new 650m long boardwork will ensure all abilities access to one of the most awe inspiring tropical rainforests in the world, the incredible World Heritage listed Daintree National Park.

QCC Protected Areas Campaigner Nicky Moffat said

Visitors and locals alike love national parks, and none are more special or iconic to Queensland than the Daintree.

Boardwalks like this are the kind of eco-tourism infrastructure that everyone can support. They serve important ecological functions, by minimising impacts on vegetation. Tens of thousands of visitors' footsteps can impact on the shallow root structures of rainforest species.

Boardwalks provide all-ability access, so everyone gets the opportunity to explore such an incredible area.

This project has been coordinated with the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, with Eastern Kuku Yalanji community members working on the upgrade. They are members of the oldest living culture on Earth, caring for the oldest living rainforest on the planet.

This boardwalk project was first announced in November 2023 by former environment minister, Leanne Linard. It’s great to see the commitment continued under the Crisafulli Government, and timely commencement of construction.

We look forward to the boardwalk being opened and to working with the Queensland Government on more eco-tourism projects like this one, that allow more visitors to safely and appropriately enjoy the incredible natural wonders that Queenslanders are so fortunate to enjoy.
