Our federal nature laws are broken and each year more than 300,000 hectares of habitat is lost in Queensland.
We now have a once in a generation opportunity to push for strong federal nature laws that protect and restore nature, rather than allow for continual biodiversity decline. Right now, reforms of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act are being drafted and the government needs to hear loud and clear that the community wants strong laws for our iconic creatures.
Join us as we explore what is needed from these reforms and the science behind the new legislation. The nature forum will feature leading academics and advocates. Along with a range of activities for the whole family including creating a banner that will be delivered to a federal MP.
Speakers:
** Sherie Bruce: is a First Nations Arrente/Yolgnu woman with a deep cultural connection to the Yolgnu of Ramingining. With broad experience in the Mining Industry, State Government and the conservation sector, she has a unique perspective on the environment in Queensland.
** Professor Hugh Possingham: is the former Queensland Chief Scientist with research interests in conservation research, operations research and ecology.
** Dr Michelle Ward: is a conservation scientist. Her research combines a mix of complex economic and conservation methods to find better ways to protect our threatened species. It is part of critical research work being undertaken locally to try and help address our extinction crisis.
** Martin Taylor: is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at UQ. He has had a varied career as a biologist and conservation scientist, ranging from the US to Australia, and from whaling to rainforests.
** Paul Spearim: is the Protect Country Strategist with Queensland Conservation Council. He is from the big light Burruguu of Bumaay Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay nation of Northern NSW and Southern QLD, and also from the Ngarabal Nation of South Eastern QLD.
** James Watson: is a Professor of Conservation Science at UQ. He leads both the Green Fire Science research group and the Research and Recovery of Endangered Species. He has worked widely, including a PhD researching bird conservation in Madagascar.
