Future Made in Australia highlights division between state and federal governments

The Queensland Conservation Council has welcomed the Future Made in Australia legislation passing the Federal Senate as a way to help Queensland take advantage of our natural renewable energy advantage to power new clean industries.

While the Australian Government has a clear plan to invest in Queensland's economic future, the Queensland Government has made repeated attacks against new clean energy and industry – risking the economic future of regional Queensland communities.

Queensland Conservation Council Director Dave Copeman said

Future Made in Australia is a great step forward for Queensland. Investing in new clean industries is good for our climate, jobs and long-term economic prosperity for our regions.

Queensland has all the right ingredients to create future-proof industries in green aluminium, green steel and green hydrogen. Investing in our natural advantage in renewable energy and new clean manufacturing industries is our chance for security and long-term prosperity as the world decarbonises.

Future Made in Australia can help keep jobs in places like Gladstone, where Rio Tinto’s aluminium refinery supports thousands of jobs and has plans to repower with renewable energy.

Unfortunately, while the Australian Government is investing in the future, the Queensland Government is undermining the state’s progress on renewable energy and green hydrogen.

The Queensland Government has now been in government for over 100 days and they still don’t have an energy plan, they’ve signalled they plan to repeal Queensland’s renewable energy targets, and they have withdrawn support for the state’s biggest hydrogen proposal.

Responsible governments look beyond their term of government and plan for the future. Politicians that are trying to derail investment in renewable energy and new clean manufacturing industries are sabotaging the future of regional Queensland communities.

The Queensland Government is creating investment uncertainty and signalling that Queensland is closed for clean business.

To meet our climate targets and secure a prosperous future for our communities, the Queensland Government needs to urgently release an energy plan to meet the state’s renewable energy targets.
