Email your MP and the Premier to reject coal mine expansions

Send an email to your local MP, Premier David Crisafulli, and Environment Minister Andrew Powell, urging them to refuse these coal mine expansions and protect Queensland's prime agricultural land, regional communities and the health of future generations.

 I am writing because I am deeply concerned about the 27 coal mine proposals in the pipeline for regional Queensland. These 27 coal proposals would dig up 5 billion tonnes of coal and add 13 billion tonnes of pollution to the atmosphere at a time when our communities desperately need emissions to be reduced, to protect us from further harm.
The Labor government weakened Queensland's water laws to give mining companies preferential access to this State's precious groundwater.
Queensland is a place of unparalleled agricultural productivity. But Queensland is also one of the most intensive sites for the extraction of fossil fuels in the world - with over 60 operating coal mines producing over 250 million tonnes of coal per year. Many of these mines are impacting high value agricultural land. For example the Baralaba South coal mine will directly destroy 556 hectares of strategic cropping land and impact hundreds more hectares of critical farmland due to dust.
Queenslanders are increasingly being hit by more intense and frequent flooding and cyclones. Major floods before and after Tropical Cyclone Alfred were some of the worst extreme weather disasters ever experienced by regional Queensland communities. Coal companies also release billions of litres of contaminated coal water from coal mines in the wake of these disastrous floods and rains. Meanwhile, a third of the world's more-advanced coal mining projects are located in Australia, mostly in Queensland.
You have the power to protect Queensland's water resources and communities from the impacts of these huge proposed coal expansions. Super-profits from coal mining billionaires should be invested in a transition plan for workers and invested in projects that make regional communities more resilient to extreme weather disasters. National polling in 2024 showed that half of Australians think that we shouldn't open any new coal mines.
I urge you to protect Queensland's prime agricultural land, regional communities and the health of future generations, and refuse these coal mine expansions.
