Crisafulli urged to match $250m federal nature spend
Conservationists are "thrilled" by today’s $250m Australian Government funding commitment to boost protected areas and preserve threatened species, and are calling on the State Government to announce a similar spend in the upcoming State budget.
QCC Protected Areas Campaigner Nicky Moffat said
This funding is long overdue, as Queensland remains the worst state in the country for protected area coverage.
We expected to see innovation in biodiversity conservation from the new Government, but so far we are in the dark as to what the Minister is doing. Hopefully this announcement gives the Crisafulli Government the impetus to get moving on reaching 17% protected areas in Queensland by 2030.
Queensland’s vast landscapes are incredibly diverse but we have less than 9% of our land formally protected.
This federal funding announcement is great and is needed most strongly in Queensland, where we have the greatest biodiversity but more than 1,000 threatened species are fighting for survival.
Queenslanders love getting out into nature, and we know from recent polling that 77% want more national parks.
