Thank Gold Coast City Councillors for withdrawing cableway project funding

Councillors Glenn Tozer, Peter Young, Dan Doran, Donna Gates, Brooke Patterson, Josh Martin, Naomi Fowler, Joe Wilkinson, Darren Taylor, Gail O’Neil, and Tom Tate voted to end Council spending on investigating a cableway to Springbrook National Park.

 Thank you for voting to end Council spending on investigating a cableway to Springbrook National Park.
Springbrook is World Heritage-listed, home to rare and threatened species, and part of a delicate ecosystem that a large-scale construction project would put at serious risk. The proposal was never just an environmental gamble - it carried real economic and social risks too.
The State Government's rejection of a similar cableway proposal in 2000 is instructive. Since then, protections for our World Heritage areas and their endangered species have only strengthened, including a Commonwealth "unacceptable impact" test that cannot be offset. Any future proponent would face an even higher bar than the one already cleared in 2000.
