Stop Dreamworld clearing koala habitat

The Crisafulli Government's decision to approve Dreamworld's Masterplan is a major set-back for koalas of the northern Gold Coast.

The Queensland Conservation Council, Gecko Environment Council, and Coomera Conservation Group oppose the clearing of koala habitat and call for Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt to use his powers to call in this project for assessment under nature protection laws.

Dear Minister Watt,

This week the Queensland government approved Dreamworld’s masterplan to expand into surrounding bushland. This expansion would remove 42,285 square metres of koala habitat, including 1,072 koala habitat trees. This area has previously been identified as vitally important koala habitat that must be protected - surveys in 2025 confirmed 68 koalas within a 2 kilometre radius.

The number of urban koalas in the East Coomera-Pimpama area have halved in the past decade and many on-ground conservation efforts are underway to turn their decline around.

As koalas are a federally-listed endangered species, any project that threatens their habitat must be referred for assessment under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. We understand no such referral has occurred.

Please use your powers under the EPBC Act to call in this project for assessment under Commonwealth law, and reject it to save the remaining koalas in Coomera.
