We Won! After years of community campaigning for strong new nature laws, reforms to Australia’s federal nature law, the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, finally passed parliament on the 28 November 2025.

The new laws are far from perfect, but they are a leap forward in protecting nature. With greater protections for forests, woodlands that provide homes for threatened species and for the first time ever a National Environmental Protection Agency.

Thank you for delivering the much needed reforms to our federal nature law, the EPBC Act. Strengthening the EPBC Act is essential for protecting Queensland's extraordinary biodiversity, supporting healthy landscapes, and ensuring development doesn't come at the cost of nature.
I write to express my sincere gratitude for what the new laws have achieved, including, defining unacceptable impacts, establishing the first ever National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) with stronger enforcement powers, and constraining land clearing exemptions.
The Environment Protection Reform Act 2025 is a leap forward in protecting nature. However, there are still key areas of concern including the potential devolution to states and territories of federal decision-making for matters of national environmental significance, and the ongoing failure to address climate impacts within the reforms – despite clear advice from the conservation sector and science community.
Many parts of the reforms require adequate resources to ensure that they are effective. In particular, it's important that there are detailed plans to make resources available to NEPA, Environment Information Australia, developing new protection statements, monitoring land clearing, and conservation planning.
Thank you for working to protect Queensland's forests, woodlands, and the over 1,000 threatened species that rely upon healthy and thriving ecosystems.
