Queensland Conservation Council made a brief submission to the Queensland Renewable Energy Expert Panel, in response to its Draft Report ‘Credible pathways to a 50% renewable energy target for Queensland’.
We see renewable energy as a crucial part of avoiding damaging climate change and transforming the Queensland economy to a post-carbon future. We are generally supportive of the Expert Panel’s finding such a target is achievable, and that there are several pathways to this. We do have some concerns about the aspects of modelling assumptions, and we are also anxious to ensure that the shift to renewable energy is connected to a clear shift away from coal-fired and other fossil fuels-based energy production, and a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector.
