Lake Vermont Court Case

The Queensland Conservation Council is taking a coal mine to court!

The Lake Vermont coal project is already spewing climate pollution into our atmosphere and driving the climate crisis, threatening endangered species and wetlands at the same time.

Now the Queensland Government has issued a draft approval to a mining corporation, Bowen Basin Coal, to extend this project’s climate and environmental footprint even further.

So, represented by the experienced Ninox Law, Queensland Conservation Council has lodged an objection to the Lake Vermont Meadowbrook Project in the Queensland Land Court.

These kind of bold actions are timely and costly, but with your help, we can ensure our communities and the nature we all love is protected.

Will you chip in and help us protect communities, nature, and our climate from the Lake Vermont Coal mine?

This mine has been operating since 2008, and the latest Meadowbrook extension would increase the impacts on climate, threatened species, and water:

🔥 Pollute at a minimum, 35,000,000 tonnes CO2-e Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, and 313,000,000 CO2-e Scope 3 emissions. This is in addition to the estimated 12,400,000 CO2-e which will still be released from the existing mine.

🐨 Over 100 hectares of endangered Koala and Greater Glider habitat, and over 200 hectares of vulnerable Ornamental Snake habitat.

🐠 Downstream impacts to the water catchments, including the Fitzroy Basin and the Great Barrier Reef Basin.

At a time when we are already facing unprecedented climate disasters, and with our threatened species at risks, these impacts are unacceptable. That's why we're taking this project to court and calling for their application to be refused.
