Koalas - Queensland Conservation Council

Sign the petition: Palaszczuk government, save SEQ Koalas

Stand with us in calling on the Palaszczuk government to stop the clearing of koala habitat in Southeast Queensland.

An expert panel report has shown that past efforts to protect the koala, which is Queensland’s official animal emblem, have failed. Up to 80% of the koala population in Southeast Queensland has been lost in just 20 years due to destruction of woodland habitat, traffic issues and domestic dog attacks

The koala now faces the prospect of extinction in the wild in Southeast Queensland.

The State Government needs to take urgent action and immediately:

  • implement a moratorium on any clearing in south-east Queensland
  • declare the koala ‘Endangered’ in south-east Queensland
  • prioritise koala and habitat protection in new planning rules

Send a clear message that more needs to be done urgently to protect our state emblem.

As a retired biologist I can say that we will lose our koalas in the Redlands unless we have a sustainable level of development. I am very disappointed in our Redlands Council.

The last of the iconic animals who have endured human company and who have been much loved by millions of visitors in SE Qld are about to become a memory of living in the wild and where the only home for them now will be in a caged residence for life. Humans will demand that they give up their home for development of future human residence. This insane race to be the most populated country will destroy all life on our planet if we continue.

The koala is actually facing extinction in large areas of Queensland and NSW. Habitat loss and fragmentation bring about too many deaths, therefore koala population is rapidly declining. I think that’s equal to animal cruelty and this must come to a halt! Please protect koalas and their habitat before it’s too late! They need homes and their source of food!
