The Greater Brisbane Environment Advocacy Network

The Greater Brisbane region is home to over 2 million people - around half of Queensland’s total population - and is also home to the most biodiverse capital city in Australia. This creates a unique challenge and an exciting opportunity to achieve a truly green and sustainable city.

From October 2018 - November 2019, QCC delivered 12-month Myer Foundation grant for the Greater Brisbane Region Coordination Project. The project's objectives were to build the capacity of local groups, improve coordination and deliver better conservation outcomes for the region. Representatives of more than 100 locally-based environment groups were engaged in co-designing a plan for building the foundations for ongoing coordinated advocacy among Greater Brisbane’s environment groups. This informal network of organisations is called the Greater Brisbane Environment Advocacy Network (G-BEAN).

The G-BEAN is an evolving, growing community representing those working collectively to build on current advocacy efforts, initiate actions, organise for impact and achieve significant, long-lasting change for the region. The network focuses its conservation and environmental protection efforts within the local government areas of Brisbane, Logan, Redlands, Ipswich, and Moreton. The G-BEAN also works with neighbouring groups including the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Darling Downs Environment Council, the Gold Coast Environment Council, and groups representing the Scenic Rim to work to reduce the impact we have on the wider Australian landscape, as well as the global environment and climate system.

The map below, developed by a research student, Maggie, from the University of Queensland, provides a visual representation of the social network of some of the active environment and conservation advocacy groups in the Greater Brisbane region. You can find group profiles including their location, contact information, and issues focus, by clicking on their placemark on the map.

The map aims to assist in sharing information and connecting groups and individuals to be more effective advocates that are collectively delivering positive change.

We are also collecting stories from G-BEAN members about their local campaigns - Click here to hear from grassroots campaigners about their excellent work protecting local places.
