Fund Protected Areas

Well-managed national parks and nature refuges (protected areas on private land) are Queensland's best chance to protect endangered wildlife, conserve nature for future generations, and protect cultural values. Queensland currently has just over 8% of its land in protected areas. This is the lowest percentage of any state or territory in Australia.

At the end of 2020 we welcomed the release of the Queensland Government's Protected Area Strategy 2020-2030, a plan to deliver a ‘world leading protected areas network’ through a commitment to double Queensland’s protected area estate to 17%. This is an ambitious goal, considering it has taken the 12 decades since the first national park was established to reach the current 8.26%.

Ambitious goals need ambitious funding! More funding will enable the government to purchase and protect more areas of high conservation value, whilst employing more rangers to help properly manage these protected areas.
