Thousands of Queenslanders will be denied access to free environmental justice, advice, and education after the Crisafulli Government has broken its first election promise on environmental protection, ripping all funding from the vital Environment Defenders Office.

Not one cent of funding is allocated for the EDO in the upcoming Queensland State Budget, despite the LNP making multiple public and private assurances in the lead up to the 2024 state election that it would not cut funding to this vital community legal centre.

Dear Premier David Crisafulli, Attorney-General Deb Frecklington, and Minister for the Environment Andrew Powell,
For more than 35 years, the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) has provided legal advice and representation to Queensland communities and individuals who seek to protect our precious natural environment.
Over the past five years alone, EDO has provided free legal services in relation to complex environmental and planning matters to more than 1,500 Queenslanders across the state from its offices in Brisbane and Cairns.
In the lead up to the 2024 state election, the community was given multiple public assurances that the LNP would not cut funding to this vital community legal centre.
These commitments were warmly welcomed at the time, and recognised as a break from the former Newman Government's approach to cutting funding to community services including the EDO.
I am shocked to learn from national media that the Crisafulli Government has decided to not renew EDO's funding, leaving Queenslanders without crucial advice, support and representation around environment and planning law.
Both the Attorney-General's Department, and the Department of the Environment, Tourism Science and Innovation provided funding to the EDO. In two separate funding decisions this year, this funding was not renewed.
By allowing this to happen, the Queensland LNP has reneged on its election promise. If funding is not maintained, thousands of Queenslanders will be denied access to environmental justice, advice, and education.
