Gloria Wiskar signed Save SEQ Koalas 2017-08-14 11:25:47 +1000There is such obvious apathy about protecting our koalas. It seems that authorities are nonchalant at the prospect of South-East Queensland being driven to extinction, just as long as there are sufficient koalas in zoos for the requisite photo opportunities for so-called celebrities with cuddly koalas.
Develop some conscience, politicians! Developers are being allowed to destroy native vegetation from horizon to horizon. From a 612 radio interview today, came the extraordinary claim that foreign developers are exempt from planning laws!!! And I am livid when developers clear and concrete vast expanses and then have the gall to call their disgusting estates ‘The Grove’ or ‘Brentwood Forest’ or ‘The Arbour’ etc.
Maybe not koala habitat this, but the Carseldine Uni site ? Our Environment? Minister says when that is developed, it will be good, with coffee shops!!?? No thought for the destruction of our native fauna.
Stand with us in calling on the Palaszczuk government to stop the clearing of koala habitat in Southeast Queensland.
An expert panel report has shown that past efforts to protect the koala, which is Queensland’s official animal emblem, have failed. Up to 80% of the koala population in Southeast Queensland has been lost in just 20 years due to destruction of woodland habitat, traffic issues and domestic dog attacks
The koala now faces the prospect of extinction in the wild in Southeast Queensland.
The State Government needs to take urgent action and immediately:
- implement a moratorium on any clearing in south-east Queensland
- declare the koala ‘Endangered’ in south-east Queensland
- prioritise koala and habitat protection in new planning rules
Send a clear message that more needs to be done urgently to protect our state emblem.
