Submission to the Inquiry into the Environmental Protection (Underground Water Management) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 - Queensland Conservation Council

Submission to the Inquiry into the Environmental Protection (Underground Water Management) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016

QCC made a brief submission on the Agriculture and Environment Committee of Queensland Parliament regarding the Environmental Protection (Underground Water Management) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 (referred to as the ‘EPOLA Bill’).

We made a series of recommendations, including blocking the establishment of a statutory right for resource projects to take groundwater without a licence (and to retain current objection rights), applying the full principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development to interim water licence assessments, and other changes to the proposed legislation.

We expect the Committee to report by Tuesday 25 October 2016, and for this Bill and other water reform legislation to be debated and voted on in November.
