Koalas - Queensland Conservation Council

Sign the petition: Palaszczuk government, save SEQ Koalas

Stand with us in calling on the Palaszczuk government to stop the clearing of koala habitat in Southeast Queensland.

An expert panel report has shown that past efforts to protect the koala, which is Queensland’s official animal emblem, have failed. Up to 80% of the koala population in Southeast Queensland has been lost in just 20 years due to destruction of woodland habitat, traffic issues and domestic dog attacks

The koala now faces the prospect of extinction in the wild in Southeast Queensland.

The State Government needs to take urgent action and immediately:

  • implement a moratorium on any clearing in south-east Queensland
  • declare the koala ‘Endangered’ in south-east Queensland
  • prioritise koala and habitat protection in new planning rules

Send a clear message that more needs to be done urgently to protect our state emblem.

As a retired biologist I can say that we will lose our koalas in the Redlands unless we have a sustainable level of development. I am very disappointed in our Redlands Council.

The rampant destruction of natural habitat areas in Southeast Queensland with the passive endorsement or active facilitation by councils and the State Government is appalling and the direct and horrific impacts upon our native wildlife populations is incontrovertible. This must end. Councils and the State Government are obligated to represent the long-term interests of our community and our environment, as they are elected by the community, NOT by self-serving commercial interests in property development, forestry or mining, who have zero commitment to the community’s best interests. The desperate situation facing our koala populations in SEQ is unmistakeable, and failing to act now with doom this iconic species, and surely will have a similar consequence for other native species of wildlife.

If elected representatives continue to dismiss our community’s deep and well-founded concerns about our environment and ecological sustainability and diversity, then this abject failure would reinforce the fact that they are unworthy to execute their responsibilities of office. Failing to act now, to take decisive steps to address the most urgent need to stop the destruction and to fully commit to preserving our green spaces and our native wildlife would be heinous and unforgivable, and a tragic legacy for future generations. Our native wildlife and their natural habitats are irreplaceable …. Council and State Government members are not.

Given the urgency of this issue and the need for proactive, positive and committed support from council and State members now before it is too late, I have raised a petition, which I hope will help to generate more pressure on relevant elected members. Any additional support you may be able to give by signing and sharing will be welcomed.
