Koalas - Queensland Conservation Council

Sign the petition: Palaszczuk government, save SEQ Koalas

Stand with us in calling on the Palaszczuk government to stop the clearing of koala habitat in Southeast Queensland.

An expert panel report has shown that past efforts to protect the koala, which is Queensland’s official animal emblem, have failed. Up to 80% of the koala population in Southeast Queensland has been lost in just 20 years due to destruction of woodland habitat, traffic issues and domestic dog attacks

The koala now faces the prospect of extinction in the wild in Southeast Queensland.

The State Government needs to take urgent action and immediately:

  • implement a moratorium on any clearing in south-east Queensland
  • declare the koala ‘Endangered’ in south-east Queensland
  • prioritise koala and habitat protection in new planning rules

Send a clear message that more needs to be done urgently to protect our state emblem.

Time is running out for our koalas and other native species that depend on native habitat. The wanton, incessant destruction of their habitat must end now. Governments MUST recognise their culpability in this tragic, irresponsible and reckless destruction. Future generations will justifiably be contemptuous if we continue to fail to act to protect our native habitats and wildlife. We need committed action NOW to ensure a future that is has a healthy, sustainable, thriving and ecologically diverse environment and where our native wildlife are no longer threatened.

We don’t expect politicians to care about wildlife unless their seat is dependant on them, sick will never happen in hillbillies Queensland, but those of us who do care for and about wildlife, we vote, and we remember.

As a retired biologist I can say that we will lose our koalas in the Redlands unless we have a sustainable level of development. I am very disappointed in our Redlands Council.
