Sign the petition: Palaszczuk government, save SEQ Koalas

Stand with us in calling on the Palaszczuk government to stop the clearing of koala habitat in Southeast Queensland.

An expert panel report has shown that past efforts to protect the koala, which is Queensland’s official animal emblem, have failed. Up to 80% of the koala population in Southeast Queensland has been lost in just 20 years due to destruction of woodland habitat, traffic issues and domestic dog attacks

The koala now faces the prospect of extinction in the wild in Southeast Queensland.

The State Government needs to take urgent action and immediately:

  • implement a moratorium on any clearing in south-east Queensland
  • declare the koala ‘Endangered’ in south-east Queensland
  • prioritise koala and habitat protection in new planning rules

Send a clear message that more needs to be done urgently to protect our state emblem.

The current declines in Koala numbers is a disgrace our state should be ashamed of.

We should value what we still have. Our politicians are inert and seem to react when it is too late.

SEQ habitat restoration is crucial – needs riparian vegetation replanting, wildlife corridors – including (like it or not) safe roadway crossings for koalas.

Now that Uni Sunshine Coast have developed a vaccine that immunises koalas against chlamydia, a broadscale programme of koala vaccination is also necessary.

It’s time serious money was put into koalas instead of throwing money at Adani.

Razing the earth brings two fold distress for Future Humans via climate change and ecosystem collapse. People cannot survive unless biodiversity in the wild is abundant as well as “diverse.”

We urgently need to protect Koala habitat in reserves NOW. Do we really want to be responsible for the extinction of Koala’s in our lifetime because we failed to act. Koala’s are most abundant in lowland eucalyptus forests where we all want to build houses. We have to protect their habitat and accept that we can’t keep expanding housing area into bushland without loosing our wildlife. Koalas are not the only species we are going to lose.

Koala habitat in the Logan Country region is being removed at an alarming rate.
